Friendster Forgotten
I was giving a little talk & tour this morning to some juniors and seniors from the marketing and advertising program at BC this morning. It was mostly about the way our company works and our process and the like, but at one point, I was talking about how the landscape of the internet's changed over the years. Just stuff about how different technologies and trends come and go and how that affects the sort of work we see from project to project. This lead to a brief talk about that whole "web2.0" evolution and how user-generated content and social networks really took the limelight for a bit there, for which I mostly credited/blamed Friendster.

It wasn't the real point of our conversation, so I was just sort of breezing along, but I had to pause for a minute when I saw that there were a lot of blank stares throughout the room. So I stopped to see where I'd lost them, and it turns out that none of them had ever heard of Friendster.

Ouch. They're even past myspace at this point.

I was talking to some much younger co-workers at lunch and mentioned that my friends and I sent letters to each other during freshman year of college, before the internet and email were so widespread. They looked at me like I was a crazy person.

In high school or in junior high did you used to write notes to your friends? The kind that you folded up into a little triangle? I wonder if kids still do that one.

Of course I did!! And the young-uns I was talking did too. The topic came up because we were discussing random boxes of stuff that we all have saved somewhere and everyone had a box of folded up notes from high school.

When did Friendster happen? 2003?

So these kids were 17 or thereabouts. And they didn't know about Friendster?

I wonder if they were a representative sample of "kids today"?

wow! that's so interesting and awesome that they've never heard of it. I think I was on Friendster in June 2003 according to my profile. Before that, I was all about Make Out Club and before that, well, AOL -- but I never used that to find people. The need increased when I finally went to college and wanted to stay in touch with people

I mean, it's like how younger kids haven't even heard of Transformers before the movie last year. :D https://24ever.com.ph
