| The Art of Tim Burton |
[Nov. 18th, 2009|10:48 am] |
While my honeymoon with Tim Burton has definitely ended, it's tough to not feel some stir of affection when looking through some of the materials surfacing now in anticipation of both Alice in Wonderland as well as his upcoming MOMA exhibit. By way of example, Wired's compiled a few samples of his concept art which will be featured in an upcoming publication. There's also a little trailer here for the exhibit itself which is undeniably charming.

| Dock Ellis & The LSD No-No |
[Nov. 13th, 2009|04:26 pm] |
You don't have to be a baseball fan to appreciate this story about Pittsburgh Pirate's pitcher Dock Ellis' acid ride through a no-hitter in 1970. No Mas is showcasing an animated rendition of the story as told by Ellis himself which is definitely worth a viewing.
It's on YouTube over here.

| Le Petit Chèvre |
[Nov. 10th, 2009|12:29 am] |
Last week, I was down at the Goodwill, looking for a new coffee cup to take to work. I found two that pleased me, one sporting a classy Ralph Lauren polo scene and another from the Pine Street Inn featuring an illustrated sort of 'Good Night Moon' scene. However, I walked past the real score on my way out of the trinkets section. Priced at an affordable $1.99 was this horror of a treasure– a foot-tall marionette of a goat-boy, clutching a mug of beer.

Naturally, it came home with me, where I proceeded to watch it from the corner of my eye for the rest of the evening, convinced that at any moment the Blue Fairy would come crashing in through my window, wave her wand, and send it off on some ruminantal rampage towards my throat. I was anxious to put it to some use, but even after I woke up the next day and ensured that it was still hanging safely where I'd left it, I still wasn't entirely sure what to do with the thing.
I didn't really have a satisfactory solution for a couple of days, until I was reminded of Le Petit Dummy, an iPhone app created by The Classics Presents, the project of a couple of other ex-Barbarians, Robert and Bill. The app, which allows you to place an animated mouth overtop of a photo and then auto-sync it to a sound file, had already basically paid for its own deviously incremental costs over a few late-night hours and seemed to be just the thing to toss the goat at. Sadly, there's no video export yet, so my macro-free Flip camera had to suffice. But who knows, maybe the extra blur will lend goatboy a superfluous air of mystique.
Vimeo-ver here, YouTube over there.
And be sure to check out The Classics Presents' site for some more samples of their handiwork. I'm particularly fond of "Bunny O'Connor." |

| Felicitiy Floo Visits the Zoo |
[Oct. 15th, 2009|12:59 pm] |
A note for you breeders and fans of children's books:
My friend Kevin's wife has just published her first children's book, entitled "Felicitiy Floo Visits the Zoo," a beautifully drawn story about an ill little girl's trip to the zoo. Just in time for flu season. But if not for the lessons in hand-washing or the awesome artwork, checking it out would at least be a firm show of support for both a local and first-time author. And who wouldn't feel good about that?
But that's not all! For those of you supremely motivated folks, especially those who may already have a child on hand, there's also going to be a reading of the book this Saturday afternoon at the Prudential Center Barnes & Noble, starting at 2pm. They'll have copies of the book there for your perusal or purchase, and of course it's also available on Amazon.
Check it out!

| Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus trailer |

Obviously Heath Ledger's post-mortem shape-shifting kinda steals the show here, but Tom Waits as the devil... now that's a show in itself.

| Well-Dressed Graffiti |
[Oct. 5th, 2009|12:10 am] |

I think it's safe to say that not all dark turns in Allston yield unpleasant surprises; maybe some are quite the oppose. For example, this adorable little fellow on the fence behind the new Walgreen's on Cambridge. Who wouldn't wanna stumble into a fine chap like that? |
